History
Hummerston Ward was inaugurated in Addiscombe, South London in February 1987 by two longstanding friends, after 5 months of design and product development. The aim was to batch produce items of Victorian influenced bathroom furniture which was at the height of fashion at that time. A series of events, during the first 2 years, not least of which being the economic recession of the late eighties and the departure of one of the partners, lead to the business focusing on producing bespoke, mainly bathroom furniture for a small number of design studios in the Surrey area.
The business moved to its present location in Somerset in 1994 where I have a large workshop in what used to be a creamery and a home and office just down the road.
For much of the time since the move, the design studios in Surrey continued to provide the bulk of my work, but new contacts are continually made leading to occasional commissions from other sources. An interesting diversion was to be commissioned by the museums department of Somerset County Council to make display and storage cabinets for both the military museum in Taunton and the doll museum in Dunster. However, over the past three years, the emphasis has shifted quite noticeably in favour of local, mainly private commissions, an area that I am keen to develop.
Although for many years, a one man business, (I'm the Ward part of Hummerston Ward), I have developed close working relationships with a couple of similar highly skilled craftsmen and we are able to help each other out when the need arises, whether it be in the workshop, or on site assisting with an installation.
